The Superintendent of Schools is the administrative head of the Georgia of Department of Education, which oversees the state's K-12 public education system. The superintendent is charged with instituting the policies of the state Board of Education and managing operations for the school system.

Key areas of focus include improving classroom conditions, securing school funding, and advancing justice.
The Candidates

Anton Anthony
Career experience includes working as an educator, administrator, and business owner. Current superintendent of Hancock County Schools in Sparta.
Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, an Educational Specialist in Curriculum & Instruction, and an Educational Specialist add-on in Educational Leadership from Augusta University, and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from North Central Theological Seminary.
Key issues:
Equity through access, accountability through improvement, and opportunity for every child.
Education must cultivate curiosity, strengthen literacy, and create environments where students are empowered to think, build, and lead.
Education should equip students to think critically, adapt, and create solutions to real-world challenges.

Otha Thornton
Retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. Served on the National PTA's Board of Directors, as well as state PTA boards. Education: bachelor's degree from Morehouse College and a master’s degree in communications from Michigan Technological University. Ran for the position in 2018 as the Democratic nominee, securing about 47% of the vote in the general election.

Lydia Powell
25 years of experience in education including serving as Assistant Principal at Hampton High School.
